Not the best of news, I regret to say. While work was being carried out on the boiler recently, it was noticed that there were cracks between a number of the rivets around the foundation ring. We have therefore decided to remove the ring and establish the state of the ring, the shell and the fIrebox...

Thanks to Francesca Halfacree (pronounced 'hulfa-kree') at Cumbria County Council Archives, I have now downloaded all 48 of the drawings which her department scanned of the Cowans Sheldon 1930 crane, Order 5111/13, delivered to the LMS in May 1931, currently at Didcot. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

Pleased to say that the crane passed that particular inspection. Comments included the observation that it is 'hugely over-engineered' .... and that, with sufficient power at the boiler end, it would be capable of lifting considerably more than 50 tons. Considerably more.

Does anyone know of a source of reasonably-priced single-ram lubricators? By way of a progress report on the Didcot Cowans Sheldon, we're having new steam pipes fabricated, for both supply and exhaust sides because there was a bleedin great hole in one of the exhaust pipes! We're having an insurance...
