Hi Brian, I believe that the two cranes you describe are these:- RS1091/30 was a Cowans Sheldon 30-ton "modernisation plan" crane delivered in 1961 and initially allocated to Saltely. It was reallocated to Allerton in Feb 1969, and was later renumbered ADM1091/30 (the match truck number wa...

If I recall correctly the big ends of GWR 2 were originally oil lubricated and later converted (date unknown) to grease. Each big end is a large split brass casting with white metal insert, and a "Kingfisher" screw top greaser has been fitted where the trimming of the oil pot used to fit. ...

I really don't think that that much thought went into it! Bearing in mind that it is a very old model, designed by Triang at a time when you were lucky if ready-to-run models even had the right number of wheels, I suspect the design brief was to produce a model with economical tooling that would cop...

Hmm, I hadn't realised just how scarce Vol 2 has become! None of my usual sources seems to have a copy at the moment, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for you.

There are plenty of copies of vols 1 and 3 around, but not vol 2.

The Hornby (ex-Triang) crane model is based upon the twelve 75-ton cranes build for BR between 1960 and 1963 by Cowans, Sheldon & Co of Carlisle. These are often, albeit slightly erroneously, referred to as "Modernisation Plan" cranes since the need for them was identified around about...

Steve, I will definitely still have the copy you were kind enough to send to me, but finding it may be as big a job as restoring No 2!

I will have a hunt round and let you know if I can find it.

Regards

Roger

Well, that didn't last long, what a shame!

Is the crane now fully operational? Any idea of price/reserve?

Presumably by Hornby you mean the current (ex-Triang-) Hormby 75-ton crane, not the old Hornby-Dublo 45 ton crane? ... No Roger, I was talking about those that cannot afford to buy the new Bachmann 38-800 to 803 Ransomes & Rapier 45 Ton Breakdown crane at around £212+, that is being produced as...

There is a short BBC documentary produced to mark the 50th anniversary of the Hixon accident which includes some excellent footage of the overturned crane.
