You could also try Bridon Ropes, now part of the Bridon Bekaert group. https://www.bridon-bekaert.com/en-gb Bridon traditionally supplied to ropes to most British crane manufacturers and I believe supplied the ropes fitted not long ago to one of the R&R 45-tonners. The specification of the rope ...

Let's hope so. It would be an extraordinary thing to do to an operational crane, unless it needs re-roping anyway.

A set of ropes is by no means prohibitively expensive and they are effectively consumables.

Bryan, I have editted the link in your post since as originally written it appeared to take you to an undesirable and unexpected place! To view the comment you have to be logged in to OTP however, so those without an OTP account will arrive at the main page for the crane. It annoys me to read that t...

Not breakdown cranes, but it would still be a shame if they were scrapped..... The Spa Valley Railway is currently advertising two cranes for sale, and it seems likely that they may be scrapped if there are no takers. The following text is taken from their 'for sale' advertisment:- BR Taylor & H...

Presumably by Hornby you mean the current (ex-Triang-) Hormby 75-ton crane, not the old Hornby-Dublo 45 ton crane?

It sounds like a very good idea and I wish you well with it. Some photos or a link to a website would be useful.

I did try that once and received very short shrift! Sadly anyone who thinks that one sheet is worth £30+ is likely to be so money-focussed that they are highly unlikely to give anything away. If they were genuinely interested in selling at a fair, market-driven price, they'd sell by auction not by &...

From time to time some interesting drawings do turn up, but sadly more often than not at exorbitant prices.

I will usually 'watch' these items but no-one actually seems to buy them at the £30 per sheet mark.

Chris C has brought to my attention that fact that my crane is not the oldest surviving R&R crane, and that the Western Australian Railway Museum has an 1896/7, 6 wheel 10 ton R&R with vertical cylinders, Work No B773, which almost certainly is the oldest R&R crane (well, until proven ot...

My 1908 Ransomes crane can be notched up, so it was either right from the start or at least from the turn of the century. As far as I know my crane is the oldest surviving R&R steam crane in the world, so we may never learn if earlier cranes had this feature.

I completely agree with your sentiment. For a model of that calibre I think it is very reasonable. The argument that is coming from much of the model railway community seems to me to be along the lines of "I want one but can't afford it therefore Bachmann has priced it too high" which is a...
