Quick answers to your questions: 1. The beams are offset as they are too long to be stabled end-to-end. 2. The 45-tonners have four beams. The earlier 40-ton crane in the photo has six, but that was an LMS foible that gave no benefit at all under most conditions. Good luck with the modelling, and do...

We tend not to use the term "outrigger" for this extending type of support, it being more applicable to the hinged swing-out type. Note that 'beam' is one of a number of alternative names which include 'propping girders', 'girders' or simply 'props'. I normally use the latter term but will...

Yes, excellent news!

I think a brief discussion on the reasons for the ropes to be declared unfit could be useful. I've raised the topic in our Members Only section (in the Processes and Suppliers forum).

Non-member Ron Newman has provided a most interesting account of his diagnosis and repair of a fault in a 45-ton Ransomes & Rapier crane in BR days. Between us we have identified the crane as either DS1560 or DS1561 (ADRR95209 or 95210); more likely the former when it was based at Hither Green. ...

Excellent. I enjoyed watching the team in action, all co-operating under the watchful eye of the banksman. It was also pleasing to see the crane being operated in a smooth and timely manner.

It certainly does, Bryan. At about the one minute mark, "102" and "King's Cross" can be seen on the cab side, so it is the NYMR's Ransomes & Rapier 45-tonner - LNER No. 941601, BR no. (330)102. Delivered new to King's Cross in 1943, then moved to Grimesthorp in 1961, to Tinsl...

It is recorded by Peter Tatlow that the total weight of the crane with jib runner was 111 tons 16 cwt prior to the 1938 uprating from 36 to 50 tons. I can find no reference to the additional mass brought about by the uprating but would imagine that it wasn't significant. As I expect you are aware, t...
