It has been a day of drama and fast developments concerning MP21, and I regret that it has not always been possible to keep this topic up to date. As of this moment, the crane is still extant and is stored in the yard of Reid Freight Services in Stoke on Trent. David Reid, owner and proprietor of th...

It was the permanent requisitioning of two LNER cranes for use overseas in 1941 and their consequent permanent loss to the LNER which resulted in the orders for the two replacements, rather than the use at Martin Mill. LNER 951515 (CS w/n 6874/1940 allocated to Gorton) and 941600 (CS w/n 6875/1940 a...

The mystery of the disappearing crane is solved, and sadly the answer is not good.

The CVR scrapped the crane during April 2011 after it suffered damage from scrap metal thieves. Another one gone, this sadly of colossal historical value.

Hi Pete,

Very many thanks for the update, and the extremely good news that the Cravens is fully functional. It is not always easy keeping fully up to date on the status of preserved cranes unless we have a contributor from the railway concerned.

Wlecome to the forum!

Best wishes,

Roger Cooke.

Which book was on Amazon at that price? Not the disappointing and error-filled Earnshaw effort, surely?

Colin, very many thanks for this info, we will try to contact him for the story.

I get great satisfaction from posts like this, since it was precisely for this sort of thing that the BDCA was set up.

Best wishes,

Roger

Neil, Welcome to the forum! It is interesting to hear what you have to say about the Bluebell's 45-tonner, since I have wondered for some time why it fell out of use. What is the clutch problem you refer to? It is a shame I didn't know about this a year ago, since I could probably have secured the c...

John,

Many thanks for this, it is always useful to learn of snippets like this since so many of the details and dates of allocations and withdrawals are simply not recorded.

I do like that 76-ton R&R. Amazing what still exists in various parts of the world!
