This is all very interesting news and goes to show that an operation which superficially appears very straightforward can actually be anything but.

When I first saw the photos I thought that it would be a simple recovery with MFD gear!

The official report into the accident on 20th September 1966 states that there was no derailment, but the 8th sleeping carriage in the struck train was telescoped into the vehicle in front and in so being was lifted off its bogie. The crane must have been brand new when pictured, given the short time it spent with the LNER and the fact that the bunker/tank hadn't been signwritten yet.
