I spent a few minutes trying to bring out more detail on the photo. Not much success as it's too far gone, but a tiny bit more of the detail may now be visible. The crane does look like a 6-wheeler, and not a BDC.

I can narrow the identification to either one of a pair of 20-ton cranes but will say no more for a day or two in case anyone else wants to have a go at it.

Ken Hoole's book "Trains in Trouble - Vol 3" relates an incident at Connington on 15th December 1961 in which three engines and their trains were involved. These were Deltic D9012, A3 60078 and V2 60977. Unfortunately the book contains no pictures or information relating to breakdown crane...

Stan was banksman for the event, and made a fine job of it too. I was there as a spectator so was able to help out with photos.

Hopefully the insurance inspector will be aware of the huge factor of safety built into these machines. If so, he should know that keeping to 50 tons will provide no risk at all so long as the critical structure and operating apparatus are each in sound order.

Stan, I'll jump in with the original test load figures for your crane MP3:-

R&R's "Order Abstract" of 3rd June 1930 for "Shop Order 2958", stated:
Test Loads: 25% above W.L. except for 40 ft radius which is 20 tons @ 40’ 0”.
