Thought I would throw something in here to get it started.

Does anyone know what the difference in weight was between the cranes as steam and when they were converted to Deisel hydraulic ? I would guess they would be lighter after conversion.

Cowans Sheldon 10 ton steam crane worked at South African Railways' Koedoespoort workshops. Today the workshops belong to Transnet Rail Engineering and the crane is a museum piece, mounted on a short piece of track at the main entrance to the works. http://steam-locomotives-south-africa.blogspot.com...

Not quite sure of the relief crane number, more likely to be 704, if I can find my pictures I took some of the two cranes together when 701 came back from Ashford & we were swapping all the kit back into our jib carrier, for some reason the spare had no spreader beam of its own. About a year aft...

You never know who you may spot. I lost touch with all my old crew but there is always a possibility of reuniting with old friends if I can see the names.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Just to add why ADRC96701 went to Ashford, I believe it was that whilst out on a job & the breakdown train was in sidings, the crane had been moved behind the tool vans ready to propel onto the site in the morning, at some time during the night they moved the flat...
