Post subject:  Usernames - A Personal View

Members of internet forums often give themselves a username that is not their real name, presumably so as to retain a level of anonymity, and this is perfectly understandable. However I would like to see more real names as usernames on the BDCA forum, especially for anyone who intends to become a member, or is already a member, of the BDCA itself. Reasons:

1. Membership of the Association is likely to number no more than a hundred and more probably nearer half that figure. The Members Only section of the forum will therefore be close-knit and knowing each other by our real names will make it more so. Much nicer to correspond with "Ian" than with "xh57jkl" !

2. When the BDCA comes to deal with the regulatory bodies (as may well happen at some point) we will come over better as a 'serious' organisation if, when they are given access to the Members Only section of our forum, they see real names rather than pseudonyms. Real names could be especially beneficial if recognised as belonging to people who are known and respected in our field, and we already have several such people as members.

Your choice of username is entirely yours of course; I repeat that my comments here represent only my personal view. You may have good reason for not wanting others to know who you are, in which case please carry on regardless.

If anyone already registered to the forum wishes to change their Username, this is very quick and easy for me to action. I just need authorisation via a PM (or email) and it will be done.

I would like to second David's comments about user names.

I appreciate that in many cases the use of aliases on internet forums is sensible, but I like to think that this this will be a little different - perhaps more like a professional trade association than the "rant and rave" environment typical of so many internet communities.

No-one will force you to use your real name, but please give it due consideration.

I will Third that, no need to hide on a group like this.

You never know who you may spot. I lost touch with all my old crew but there is always a possibility of reuniting with old friends if I can see the names.
