Thought it about time to introduce myself.
Bryan Blundell secretary of the York Area Group of the NYMR
Through which we look after one of the two 45 ton steam cranes on the NYMR. Unfortunately out of action at the moment.

I was until 2 years ago involved with the design and planning of track renewal work on the big railway but took the money and ran when the chance arose.
Now spending a bit more time at Newbridge working with the PW dept either on the track or working on the PW fleet of wagons and On Track Plant.
Also spending too much time on the web looking for old photos and details of snowploughs.

Photo below of our crane on day of Lloyds tackle exam in 2008.
The crane normally lives in the shed behind which was built by the group funded by our efforts in paper recycling. Our main source of income.

Good to see you here, Bryan!

I didn't realise that your group provided funding for the shed. Seems the NYMR has a lot to thank you for.

I look forward to reading that the faults on your crane have been corrected and it is back in service. Hopefully very soon!

Bryan,

A warm welcome to the group!

How is the work progressing with '102, when will we see her working again?

Bryan,

I have some photo`s of the two ploughs we built at Stratford somewhere when they were all shiny & new :) I will try & find them.

The Stratford Ploughs were normaly manned by the BDV fitter or foreman, so that would be fitter John (Ozzie) Osbourne & Breakdown Foreman Peter (Robbo) Robinson.

Thanks for the replies.
The question as to what is happening with 102 is concerning us as well.
We are still pushing to get some movement with it but to no avail.
It would be a different story if it was actually ours and not the NYMRs.

As to ploughs ( I know we have gone off topic but they are my other main interest)
Attached is a photo of North Eastern Railway ploughs 18 and 20 both built at York in 1909 to the same design and paired together for most of their service life, even ending up at the same scrap yard in Gateshead together.
Happily both still survive. Number 20 not far from the location of this photo at Beamish in the reserve collection store.
The other plough number 18 is at the NYMR and is mine, currently having tons of rotten wood removed and replaced. I do mean tons of the stuff and the majority is in Oak.
A full new underframe has been fitted last year and now it is the turn of the body.
This plough was the one seen in the film "Snowdrift at Bleath Ghyll" 1955 BTF.

I'd say that it's well on topic as it forms part of an 'Introduction to Bryan'!

As with breakdown cranes, the subject of snow ploughs receives too little coverage in comparison with some other aspects of railway history and you should be proud of what you are doing in standing up for that quarter.

Just a quick update.
York Area Group is a supporting group on the NYMR.
The group tends to support the NYMR PW Dept especially with On track machines and cranes.
Until recently we had a website but had to close it down.
After a few weeks work we have set up a new website.
http://www.nymr-pway.co.uk/

Please feel free to make any comment, good or bad about it and we will see if we can improve it.

An excellent website, Bryan.

I haven't yet viewed every page but have a suggestion for the 'Volunteer' section...

Viewing the pictures is spoilt by the automatic slide-show operation. As any photo is being studied, it is replaced suddenly and unexpectedly by the next one. I'd much prefer them to change only by using the existing numerical menu at the bottom of each set and/or the Previous/Next arrows at the sides.

But overall a really attractive and comprehensive website that I'm sure will help promote YAG, the PW group and the railway as a whole.

Will pass your comment along.

Sadly no news on anything to do with 102.
Still at Grosmont untouched.
