Someone else {WNXX forum I think} said the crane was turned back as not required?

Has NR ever considered asking a private firm to man its Breakdown gang? I'm thinking Arlington Fleet services at Eastleigh.

The Bescot crane got as far as Ashford where it was held pending confirmation that it was required on site at Mountfield - it was not. Train reversed in Sevington Loop and returned north via Maidstone East as 1Z99 1207 Sevington - Wembley. Re-railing was sucessfully completed by the Bruff teams from Dollands Moor, Margam and Toton.

Interesting how official reporting can differ from actual events

Often seems to be the case, on or off the railways. Please don't let it deter you from posting the official reports, John, even though they may prove to be incorrect on occasion!

Aberdeen derailment

It would appear that both the Bescot crane and Wigan crane left Wigan for Aberdeen as 1Z99 at 09;47, 10th May. However they were delayed enroute with suspected dragging brakes on one of the cranes and on arrival at Mossend were held due to staff hours issues at Aberdeen. It was subsequently decided to use two road cranes which commenced operations at 21:30 on the 10th and was completed and the possession was given up at 03:43 on the 11th May.

Reported crane status at 02:00

Bescot crane (ADRC96710) and Wigan crane (ADRC96713) available at Mossend
Knottingley crane (ADRC96714) out of service at Worksop with a brake fault expected OK 17th May
Spare crane (ADRC96715) out of service at Wigan with a bearing defect

Reported crane status at 02:00, 16th May 2012

Bescot crane (ADRC96710) and Wigan crane (ADRC96713) available at Warrington
Knottingley crane (ADRC96714) out of service at Worksop with a brake fault expected OK 17th May
Spare crane (ADRC96715) out of service at Wigan with a bearing defect/wheelset change

So it appears that the two cranes which got as far as Motherwell for the derailment at Aberdeen are on there way home and the bearing defect on ADRC96715 is a wheelset bearing problem.

Wigan crane (ADRC96713) available at Wigan
Spare crane (ADRC96715) out of service at Wigan with a bearing defect/wheelset change

So it would appear that the Wigan crane is "back home". Will the Knottingley crane be fixed today?
