I was looking at this collection and photo 8 made me think
http://railway-photography.smugmug.com/ ... &k=Q7BCVDG

Which Crane was at Thornaby for the open day?
I then thought check the website but alas I can see no detail of allocations, is this something that we need to think about adding?

Interesting set of photos, Bryan. I hadn't seen them before, so thanks for the link. The crane in the 8th photo is probably ADRC96709 as this was based at Thornaby in that era.

Whilst a 'depot-by-depot' list of the historical locations of breakdown cranes would be useful, it would entail a lot of work to produce and upload and I think we already have the locations covered reasonably well (albeit in 'crane type/number' order) as follows:

1. The Gallery lists the major historical locations of most of its featured cranes, albeit very broadly
2. A fairly comprehensive record of the historical locations will be found in Peter Tatlow's book Railway Breakdown Cranes, volumes 1 & 2, and
3. The website's Extant UK Breakdown Cranes database lists the current location of every extant crane (other than Network Rail's tele-jib cranes).

I hope I've understood the question correctly and answered it sensibly!

The crane featured was in fact 96705, Thornaby was allocated 96709 in 1993.

From the look of it then 96705 must have gone for scrap when displaced, as I note it was scrapped in Feb 1994 at Thompsons of Stockton.

I apologise for my flawed stab at the identity and thank Dick for the correction.

BDCA member Alex Betteney photographed 96705 and 96700 in T. J. Thomson's Stockton yard in April 1993. Presumably 96705 remained there unbroken until Feb 1994.

96705 was overturned on 4th December 1992 at Ryhope so was out of service from that day.

The third photo on page 2 of that collection is the crane now at Didcot, but does anyone recognise the location (which isn't Didcot). I think it ended its service life at Haymarket; could that be where the photo is taken?

I don't know if the photo layout varies dependant on the individual.
But for me the 3rd photo on P2 is the Road Crane at York.

I guess it must vary then! For me the third picture on the second page is the ex-LMS MP10, later ADRC95204, ie the red CS lattice jib 36/50-tonner now at Didcot. There is a very prominent footbridge in the photo, which is undoubtedly a clue to identification for those who know.

I believe that the crane was at Haymarket from 1966 to 1987 (when it was sold to the GWS), hence my suspicion that the photo may be Haymarket.

On my monitor, MP10/95204 appears as the 18th photo on page 1. There is no page 2; in fact the header says "Page 1 of 1".

It must depend on the size of the monitor and its resolution.
