Neil Dimmer has recently posted a collection of photos of Class 73 Diesel / Electric locos on the web.
One of them shows 73004 with what looks like a 45t Ransomes Steam Crane passing through Waterloo

Any ideas as to date and identity?

The air brake pipe visible on the RB identifies the crane as the former DS1561, by then ADRR95210, now to be found on the Swanage Railway. Not sure about date - early/mid 80s I'd say.

If I were able to identify a crane by just a bit of its brake pipe I think I'd keep quiet about it. ;)

...says one of the very few other people on the planet who could do so!

In all seriousness it can only be 1560 or 1561, and only the latter had the external air through pipes fitted. Simple!

Hi all, looks like it could be the Ian Allan Network Day 24/10/87, judging by 37116 behind, which was not usual traction for Waterloo!!! Regards Steve

That date would fit well with the crane, which appears to be in its final condition and livery. It was withdrawn from service and sold in or shortly before June 1989.

Steve,

If there was a prize you would just have won it!

See the lowermost photo on this page for a very similar photo.

Click on the photo and you'll get a large version.

Hi Roger, 73004 was repainted shortly before this open day and I don't think ADRR95209 & 10 saw much use in the mid to late eighties. My recollections are of them being in store at the rear of Stewarts Lane Depot. These were of course the last two steam Breakdown Cranes on the BR system!! regards Steve

Hi Steve,

Indeed they were the last BR-owned steam breakdown cranes, although (as noted elsewhere on this site) more recent information suggests that neither was the last steam breakdown crane actually to work on BR metals - that privilege going to ex-GWR No 2 albeit owned and operated by the DVLR at the time.

I have no doubt that you are right that '09 and '10 saw little use towards the end, and it is a wonder that they remained 'on the books' as long as they did. I am aware that '09 was steamed once after it was sold and whilst in store at Cocklesbury Yard in Swindon by the late Ivor Huddy, but as far as I know '10 was not steamed again until after it arrived at Southall.

I visited '10 at Swanage not long ago and it is coming along very nicely! The boiler out of the ill-fated '09 was also steamed last year at the East Somerset Railway and will soon (hopefully) be fitted into ex-GWR No 2.

Regards,

Roger
