http://www.youtube.com/embed/4R184eqNNSI features a short clip of the NVR crane setting out from Wansford to assist in a wagon re-wheeling at Ferry Meadows on 24th April 2013.

Nice video. Did you take any footage of the job?

Sorry, the video isn't mine - I was committed to other matters and couldn't attend - so I don't know if any on-the-job footage was made.

In any case footage of the operation would have been quite short - during an initial lift to place a wheelset convenient for the swap, the 'hoist' brake band failed during a slewing move, bringing activity for the day to an immediate halt. The band had failed across its width at the point where it is riveted to one of the end-pieces.

Good to 'hear' from you again, Stan.

The hoist brake band failure is surprising. The crane won't have done many working hours since Richard renewed the friction lining on that band and he is observant enough that I'm sure he would have spotted any visible sign of weakness in it.

I imagine that safe practice was being followed and the load being slewed was fairly close to the ground when the brake band failed, but you couldn't have a better reminder as to why no-one should place themself under a suspended load!
