Slow progress due to weather and work. Jib runner wagon is being stripped down, descaled and painted. The Tackle box is being removed for major repairs. The bottom plate of the well and its angle irons will need replacing.

Got some bad corrosion on the prop girder box. Has anybody had to repair this?

Good to see the work still progressing, Pete.

Corrosion associated with the girder box was not as severe on MP3 as it is on 1561. My feeling is that the condition of the rivet heads may not be anything to worry about as, presumably, the rivet shanks are still sound and will be taking mostly shear rather than extension forces.

It isn't easy to judge the extent of corrosion of the plate itself, though I guess that it's unlikely to have lost all the overkill margin that R&R would have built in. Perhaps you have ultrasonic thickness testing equipment available?

The above comments are just 'first thoughts' and perhaps someone will come along with more reliable opinions.

The work you have done so far is great Pete.
I think it would be a shame not to do a full investigation on the area as it could come back and haunt you later, I agree with David, and I would also get the area shot/sand blasted to remove all the surface rust to get a better picture. Needle gunning the area is another option but this can be quite aggressive.

As a plater welder I would say needle gunning is imperative, aggression definitely required. If there is corrosion there it needs to be removed before any ultrasonics are performed. Looks like you're doing a great job, don't be tempted to cut corners. It really is a shame you're not nearer to me in Hull, I'd probably be tempted to get involved!!
