Well done Pete. Can you explain the rationale for testing at 57.8t - I understood the crane was rated at 45. Are there any guidelines for this sort of testing?

Stan, I'll jump in with the original test load figures for your crane MP3:-

R&R's "Order Abstract" of 3rd June 1930 for "Shop Order 2958", stated:
Test Loads: 25% above W.L. except for 40 ft radius which is 20 tons @ 40’ 0”.

We worked to the original specification which gives 1.25 x maximum load. = 56.25 tons/57.15tonnes
The test weights came out at 57.8 tonnes which is slightly over but was as close as we could get.

1561 carried out its first lift on the Swanage Railway on Friday. Removing a buffet coach from its site at Norden Station.
