Hia all, I haven't been on here for a while.

Regarding the West Thurrock incident, we couldn't use the two railcranes, as the wagon was full (102t), and couldn't get it emptied enough to allow for the reach with the cranes, Net Rail also wanted the main line back, as they had to re-slew the overheads back and get the line open for the Monday morning rush.

We did the job the following weekend using a crane on hire from Ainscough (although it was subbed in from Mamoot), a 600 tonner road crane, which extension sections, as it had to lift the wagons from a concrete pad some distance away, from crane fulcrum point to the centre of the wagon was 75 meters!

Setting the crane took two days, the actual job to remove 3 wagons, about 3 hours!

The wagons were taken away by road.

Cheers

Simon

Thanks for the write up Simon, it's quite interesting to hear a human account of these things as opposed to a press release.

I think this derailment is actually featured on the BBC 2 new programme "The Crane Gang" last night.
Unfortunately its using the Road Crane.

Bryan I reckon you're right.

Any insight why a road crane was used not rail cranes? On the face of it it didn't look particularly difficult.

The tv programme said it was a 1200 tonner, brought in from Tyneside or somewhere. Must have cost a fortune!

Take a look at Simons post a couple back.
He said the wagon was full and therefore too heavy at 102 tonnes.

If that was the case then moving 102t over 70 metres away then that would need a big crane.

I estimated once in 1992 to move a 6t Portacabin from near Gainsborough stn that I would need a 600t crane at £5k for the one lift.
We abandoned the cabin and bought a new one fully fitted out and installed at Haxey for less than the cost of the hire.

Yes, I forgot I'd read that! Duh!

Interesting though that the tv programme showed an activity that the narrator said was the RTWs being pumped out.

Whatever the reason it was a very impressive crane!

I caught this programme by accident. I got the impression the road crane recovery was done entirely by staff from that company, as they seemed like they'd never recovered a wagon on it's side before?
