This photo appeared on a quiz topic on National Preservation.
Reason for the crash is as stated.
Colchester 1913, incorrect use of Sykes key and failure to carry out rule 55.

My challenge to you is what was the crane in the photo.

Another interesting submission, Bryan!

I can narrow the identification to either one of a pair of 20-ton cranes but will say no more for a day or two in case anyone else wants to have a go at it.

The design is quite unmistakeable and narrowing it to two is not hard. Identifying which of the two is, I submit, not likely to be possible (there are, as far as i know, no visual identifying features which differentiate between the two).

The book "The Wreck of the Cromer Express: The Colchester Railway Accident of 1913" by J. E. Connor (2003) has a series of 10 photos which show both cranes of the pair working at the scene of this accident, so there is conclusive proof that both were present.

Photos of these cranes are generally rare, and this accident and the book mentioned above provide the great proportion of the pictures currently known to exist.
