I spent a few minutes trying to bring out more detail on the photo. Not much success as it's too far gone, but a tiny bit more of the detail may now be visible. The crane does look like a 6-wheeler, and not a BDC.

I have since found out that this is one of a series of photos about the 1908 bridge renewal on the NYMR. However no idea as to what the other photos show yet. |

The NER had a number of special 15/16 ton cranes for Departmental use; including some allocated to Permanent Way work. This looks like one of the Thomas Smith 6 wheel machines. 4248/1892 NER C1 York Leeman Raod 4249/1892 NER C2 ditto Originally fitted with Nicholson boiler. Photo - 'Illustrated History of Cranes', H.Sheryn, p. 14 . 5922/1901 Originally at Darlington Works; later York C&W works ????/ca 1904 Gateshead District PW nos. 322 and 323 7142/1907 ditto Photos - Two of the above, one as 322 and 323, Brownlie 'Railway Steam Cranes', figs. 82 and 83. One of the above attached I have two Smith catalogue pages - but files are > 256kb; so I will have to reduce.
