This photo has turned up today.
Goathland 1908 on a bridge replacement job.
Any ideas about the crane in use?
Looks like a 6 wheeler of some sort.

No other details known.

I spent a few minutes trying to bring out more detail on the photo. Not much success as it's too far gone, but a tiny bit more of the detail may now be visible. The crane does look like a 6-wheeler, and not a BDC.

I have since found out that this is one of a series of photos about the 1908 bridge renewal on the NYMR.
However no idea as to what the other photos show yet.

The NER had a number of special 15/16 ton cranes for Departmental use; including some allocated to Permanent Way work.

This looks like one of the Thomas Smith 6 wheel machines.
4248/1892 NER C1 York Leeman Raod
4249/1892 NER C2 ditto Originally fitted with Nicholson boiler.
Photo - 'Illustrated History of Cranes', H.Sheryn, p. 14 .

5922/1901 Originally at Darlington Works; later York C&W works

????/ca 1904 Gateshead District PW nos. 322 and 323
7142/1907 ditto
Photos - Two of the above, one as 322 and 323, Brownlie 'Railway Steam Cranes', figs. 82 and 83.

I have two Smith catalogue pages - but files are > 256kb; so I will have to reduce.
