Saw this comment on On Track Plant.

From a comment on Facebook: Firstly, the power unit for 37108 was lifted today for further movement for overhaul to take place. Secondly, this is likely to be the last lift that this crane will ever do. Part of the Hosking empire and seemingly surplus in Crewe, it is to be transported to the museum in Margate for static display. Unfortunately to transport it by road, the cables will need to be cut which is pretty terminal really.

Bryan, I have editted the link in your post since as originally written it appeared to take you to an undesirable and unexpected place! To view the comment you have to be logged in to OTP however, so those without an OTP account will arrive at the main page for the crane.

It annoys me to read that they'll cut the cables to separate the jib, this is wholly unnecessary and is pure laziness. It doesn't take long to de-rig the jib and secure the cables for transport. A crane without ropes in a museum is as daft as a locomotive without coupling rods.....

Let's hope that someone comes to their senses.

Hi Roger, I hope you do not mind but I have taken the liberty of using your quote on the OTP website, as I strongly agree with you.
I would also like to know the reason they are sending it to Margate, are they thinking of converting it into a ride at Dreamland.

I suspect that "cables will need to be cut" is an unsubstantiated assumption by the Facebook contributor.

The engineers responsible for the crane at Crewe surely know about de-rigging and wouldn't have made that contradictory statement.

Let's hope so. It would be an extraordinary thing to do to an operational crane, unless it needs re-roping anyway.

A set of ropes is by no means prohibitively expensive and they are effectively consumables.

A note on the OTP website reports that this crane may now have been moved to the new facility of Locomotive Storage Limited in the old Hornby site in Margate.

Anyone know if this is the case, and if so whether the ropes were cut as speculated previously?

Link below, taken from the Southern Electric Group's Facebook page, clearly shows that the ropes are no longer visible. The question is were they cut or just wound on the drums!

At least the crane looks in excellent condition, and even if the ropes have been cut it may be that they were due for replacement anyway. A set of ropes is not prohibitively expensive. It would be a daft to cut a good set on a serviceable crane without good reason.

There are some interesting goodies in that facility now!

I watched the first episode of the new programme"Train Truckers" that was broadcast on the"Yesterday" Freeview channel and I notice that in the opening sequence there's a very short shot of this crane being delivered by Allely's, so I think that its move will feature in a subsequent programme.

Thursdays @ 22:00, Yesterday channel.

Episode 4 looks like the one.
I think it is the delivery of the BDC to Margate. ... kers_.html
