"""""""""75 tonne Diesel Hydraulic Breakdown Cranes - ADRC 96710, 96713 & 96715
The three cranes are located at Network Rail/DB Cargo's Wigan Springs Branch depot.
Please note all viewing requests must be via Network Rail.
NB The cranes are only able to be road hauled from Wigan, a specialist road haulier with suitable experience and equipment will be required.""""""""""
See.........

One of the four stored at Wigan had previously been offered to the NRM. Does anyone know the status of that matter?

Whether any preservation line would want one I cannot imagine - they are rather sophisticated.
I don't know when their last valid licenses to operate ceased.

This confirms that a classic fleet of breakdown cranes in this country is at an end - the use of supposedly trackwork dedicated cranes for any job not accessible to road cranes seems to be the future.

The end of a long era.

I quite fancy one myself, but I suspect that they are not easily maintainable and spares will be a problem after a while. At least with a steam crane you can fairly easily make new parts.

I am tempted to try to arrange a viewing!

The good news is that ADRC 96714 - which was identified as a designated heritage item, was put up for disposal by the Science Museum last year. A number of preserved railway expressed an interest and one railway was successful which means that crane 14 will have a safe and secure future in preservation.

Expect to see some news on its new home in the next few weeks.

With regard to would a preserved railway be interested - while they are quite a piece of equipment, they are basically just hydraulic machines - like a modern mobile crane or RRV excavator etc.

The cranes were overhauled around 99/2000 and completely stripped, inspected and rebuilt, with many known issues resolved and new Cummins engines being fitted.

Glad to hear '14 has an assured future, are you able to reveal where it is going or is it confidential for the time being?

Hi Roger

I can't reveal where yet as there will be a joint press release in due course, but I have been involved in the process, viewed the crane up in Wigan, and will be one of the team looking after it when it arrives at our railway.

We are really excited as it will be a fantastic asset to us.

The crane has been run up, separated from its bogies and prepared for transit by road - which will happen in the next few weeks all being well. A big thanks goes to the Science Museum, Network Rail and DB Cargo for all their help to make this happen. We've had a couple of delays already due to the highways department changing the transport route - so don't hold me to it!

We have also been acquiring a range of documentation and history about the crane - including the BR acceptance certificate from 1980, details of the overhaul, etc

We would love to hear any stories and pictures about the crane, its history, incidents it attended etc to add to the history

Extended by one week, to 16.00 on the 9th September, apparently.

Perhaps nobody's submitted a tender yet.

ADRC 96714 is on the move tomorrow on the way to her new home. Leaving Wigan at 7:53, train code 6Z20, arriving at Margam at 13:38 top and tailed by a pair of 37s. An announcement will made on her new home when she arrives there.

The "uk-rail.groups.io" forum seems to have blown the gaff on its destination, but as this is a professional forum I will say nothing until the official release.
