Stonehaven derailment recovery works

Two rail cranes have been positioned at Aberdeen Craiginches.
VolkerrRail DRK81601 Kirow KRC810UK Heavy Duty Diesel Hydraulic Crane
NetworkRail 99 70 9319 013-7  Kirow KRC1210UK Heavy Duty Diesel Hydraulic Crane

An access road into the site is reported as now at a very advanced stage; but its location not elucidated.
One report states a 350T tracked crane will access the railway using this track and that it will be delivered in two parts and need a smaller tracked crane to erect it.

As Roger Cooke has stated """""""Interesting that an Army CRARRV is to be used at Stonehaven. I think this is a "first" in the UK, the use of an armoured recovery vehicle at a railway accident.""""""""""
It is normal practise in the old East to have such a vehicle in the accident recovery train consist.

My local informant tells me that the access road was in fact already there, and had been constructed to allow vehicular access to works taking place to the bridge over which the derailed train mostly passed. I think it may have been upgraded to suit its new use. His information regarding the road/crawler cranes largely matches your post although I am told that even using the upgraded access road it is unlikely to be possible to get the crawler to the railway. The Challenger CRARRV is supposedly for dragging wreckage into the range of the principal crane.

I imagine that plans may be evolving still.

It is almost impossible to avoid speculating how an incident such as this would have been cleared in "the good old days", but two cranes working one from each end would, I am sure, have made short work of it, with the wreckage being removed by rail rather than road. The incident has already closed the line for longer than the triple collision at Harrow and Wealdstone did.

"""""""" Network Rail said a 900m road and temporary bridges had been built through farmland to allow access for the specialist lifting equipment.

Specialist engineers will use a 600-tonne "crawler crane" to lift the carriages over the coming days in what is described as a "delicate process". """"""""

The 100T bull pull on the Army recovery vehicle won't be that delicate.

The power car and coach bogies will have been separated; the power unit may also be taken out separately.

Link to the NR Media Centre article on the subject, with a good aerial view of the site and site works.

Comparison with earlier aerial photos suggests that the road was extant before but has been significantly upgraded for the recovery. There is also no mention in the NR release about the use of an armoured recovery vehicle, so that may have been creative reporting!

The Network rail Media centre website (https://www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/resources) presently has a number of photographs of the Stonehaven site and the extensive recovery works:

Both the NR Kirow 1200 and the Volker 810 were seen at Perth working south from Inverness on 21 Sept.
Whether they actually did anything in the four weeks they were in Aberdeen?, not known.
