Post subject:  "Western Times" - new publication

It may be of interest to some that there is a new publication, "Western Times", which has just gone on sale. This is broadly similar to the late-lamented "GWR Journal" and is a high-quality, currently-biannual, perfect-bound "bookazine" (yuk! I can't believe that I just used that "word") filled with fairly specialised and niche articles about the GWR and BR(W) in the steam era.

The reason for mentioning this otherwise irrelevant publication on the BDCA forum is that the inaugural issue has an article about the Newton Abbot breakdown train, which includes some photos which are, as far as I know, previously unpublished.

BDCA members may be aware that NA over the years was home to a small number of GWR breakdown cranes, most famously 36-tonner No 3, but also CS 15-tonner No 8 (formerly the original No 1). The article also mentions the tool and riding vans at NA.

I'm not sure that the article on its own justifies the hefty £12.50 cover price, but if you are interested in the Western it is an attractive publication which shows promise. It is published by Transport Treasury Publishing and copies can be ordered online. It will, apparently, also be available from the shops.
