BDCA member Peter Woad, one of the regular drivers of MP3 in the late 1960s and 1970s, has written with the following information...

The driver is Arthur Butler, we were shift mates for many years.  He lived down the road from me so I used to pick him up going to work.  He was the one that trained me when I started learning to drive the crane, it was handy being on the same shift as I could get extra advice from him.  He was a long time member of the breakdown gang, always with the trademark fag end in his mouth.

The crane looks well, not long out of works.  Been trying to put a date on the video, seems it could be late 1967 or early 1968, the crane was black early June 1967.  By 2/7/1967 she had gone and the regional spare was on the train, a 30t Cowans, number 160 I think.  I don't as yet know when she came back.

The CS 30t crane was damaged beyond repair on the night of 5-6/1/1973 at Garforth near Leeds.  We'd been called out to assist York when four 100t oil tankers were derailed.  We lifted them OK but York lifting them damaged their crane.  After that we gained a large part of their area for crane work.

There was indeed a CS 30-tonner with the number (331)160 - previously RS1072/30. According to Tatlow's Breakdown Crane book, it was at Wakefield from new, to Sunderland in 1966, Dairycoates in 1968 and Botanic Gardens in 1970, finally to York before withdrawal in 1972. The latter date appears incorrect as the crane was terminally damaged at Garforth in January 1973 according to Peter's diary.
