Is there any info anywhere on this. One of the comments on the photos "111077 Mottingham W728811 A view of the bogie Presflow wagons at Mottingham after the derailment. Not sure whether the MGR train was involved or if it's being used to balance the derailment." Looking at the rail laid in the 6ft I am wondering if the MGR train has hit it and dislodged it causing the derailment to the Presflo's? Or is it that the rail was moved by the derailed train causing the MGR brakes to apply? Or that the driver saw the derailment and brought his train to a stop? Thoughts? |

In 1977 a fitted coal train stopped suddenly with a brake fault on the down line at Mottingham over catch points, and as the wagons rebounded one derailed and somehow got foul of the up line. A Northfleet to Dunstable cement train was approaching on the Up, collided with the derailed wagon, and went down the (fairly low) embankment. IIRC the Dartford Loop was blocked for about a week." http://www.kentrail.org.uk/Bexley.htm "This was not the Dartford Loop Line's first serious derailment; another had previously occurred on 11th October 1977 to the west of Mottingham station, when double-heading Class 33s hauling loaded cement wagons from Northfleet to Dunstable, collided with already derailed coal wagons of a freight on the ''down'' line. The leading locomotive, No. 33036, rolled down the embankment and due to the crash damage sustained, was prematurely withdrawn two years later. It was scrapped in October 1979 at Slade Green."
