Below is a link to a page of "nostalgic photos" on the website of the Shropshire Star. If you scroll across to photo 5/5 you will find that it is a (rather poor) photo of a breakdown crane making a very unusual lift, but can anyone identify the crane?

It isn't a difficult one to identify, and there are sadly no prizes for the first correct answer - except perhaps for a justifiable feeling of smugness! There is a clue in the fact that this crane has recently received significant unexpected publicity in the media.

Please be aware that some combinations of OS and browser seem to have trouble displaying this page (it is OK for me with Windows 7 Pro and Firefox 21.0, but I know that some versions of IE seem to have "issues").

Interesting for being a picture of a BDC in rare revenue earning service.

I like the idea of loading a pressure vessel ( thats more than just a boiler ) into the works back yard from the mail line. I cannot quite picture the tender document - ' hire crane from BR on a quiet Sunday and please check the load/radius! '.

Pity but I doubt the location will ever be identified.

( Hint taken - crane identified - but I havent got a reference to hand as to what depot had it at about that time )

Chris,

It rather depends on exactly when the photo was taken. GWR 17 was new to Stafford Road ('40 to '63), then to BR(M) at Oxley ('63 to '68), then to Tyseley ('68 to '69), then to Saltley ('69 to c.'76), then Willesden (c.'77), finally Crewe (c.'78 to withdrawal). If the dating info given in the article is correct, it is most likely that it was allocated to Tyseley or Saltley at the time.

To me the scene has the look of the Wolverhampton area.
