Thanks for posting, Bryan.

The Leighton Buzzard film shows footage of the UK's first relieving-bogie crane LMS No. MP1 (later RS1038/40) which had been delivered by Ransomes & Rapier to the Midland Railway in 1916. The year of the accident, 1931, coincides with the supply to the LMS of the generally similar crane MP3 (later RS1004/40 and ultimately given CEPS No. ADRR95207). In the clip it can be seen that the MP1's jib has 'X' bracing, which distinguishes it from MP3 which had 'Z' bracing.

I recall reading (not in 1931!) that the Leighton Buzzard accident occurred as a result of Royal Scot class 6114 'Coldstream Guardsman' failing to slow down from 55-60 mph for a 20 mph diversion from the fast line to the slow line. The driver was amongst those killed and no reason could be found for his error, however other drivers thought that smoke clinging to the boiler casing obscured his view as was common with this class.

MP1 attended another major accident less than three months later, in June 1931 at Crich, where a Leeds-Bristol 11-coach parcel express hauled by two 4-4-0 engines had ploughed into the back of a 64-vehicle minerals train after over-running two signals at danger. This was such a violent collision that a 5-ton tar boiler was thrown over 35 yards without touching the ground. The impact divided the goods train at the 47th wagon but the front portion continued for a distance, the footplate crew being unaware that a collision had taken place. The carnage was such that MP1 was one of three BDCs to attend but thankfully the death toll amounted to just two, the drivers of the parcel express, though a number of others had serious injuries. I can't find a Pathe report on that accident - it probably wasn't gruesome enough!

The LMS had a terrible record for railway accidents throughout its 25-year existence, having failed to follow the early lead of the GWR in installing ATC/AWS to help stop locos over-running signals at danger. It seems to have been easier and cheaper for the LMS to increase their stock of breakdown cranes than to install ATC to keep trains and passengers in one piece!

This has all brought to mind a list I made some time ago of BDCs featuring on British Pathe, as below. I compiled the list in 2009, prior to the launch of the BDCA, but really should have uploaded it earlier. For the sake of completeness (so far as I have it), it includes the Leighton Buzzard and Goswick reports to which Bryan gave the links.
