Another one found on Pathe.
I would like to know a rough idea as to location as the brake van is labelled LEYTON which is Stratford area or to me slightly east of London, however why is the van also lettered NE?

Bryan,

Interesting piece of film but despite the title I think it shows a civil engineers rather than a breakdown train - note the staff climbing into the ballast brake are carrying shovels and also the bogie bolster wagon adjacent to the crane is loaded with rail or steel beams. Leyton was a large permanent way depot near Stratford so the NE lettered vehicle may just have been transferred south by the LNER. Can anyone identify whether the crane is a civil engineers or breakdown type ?

Kind regards
David Morgan

As an aside to this about 1.50 in the clip
It shows a damaged wreck of a coach in passing, Any ideas as to what incident this may have been?

Definitely an Engineers' crane.

I wonder if perhaps it is a wartime clip, and the damaged carriage is the result of an air raid (not at that location though). The PW repairs could then also be connected. Pure speculation without context, of course, but there's nothing remotely "breakdown" related about that flim!

NE was an abreviated form of LNER used on all manner of goods and engineers stock.
