I'm intrigued by the comment "I remember reading a report where it was being dragged by a class 67 and that truck derailed, it turns out it's twisted causing the unbalanced side to ride up the rail" which one commenter has made as an explanation of the derailment.

I believe that he is referring to the derailment of the jib runner of ADRC96702 at Greenford East Curve on 20/11/2006. This incident was investigated and found to be due to the jib runner frame being twisted after years of being craned out of the way and then back on the rails. This resulted in the wheel loads becoming completely out-of-spec and as a result a minor (and within tolerance) later track twist cause the runner to derail. No action was taken as a result since the last strut jib cranes were all already scheduled for withdrawal. ADRC96702 was taken from OOC to Hulls of Rotherham and broken up shortly afterwards.

The MRC crane is not the one involved in the Greenford incident, and so far as I know does not have a bent runner. Also, it is evidently not the jib runner that is in the ground, rather the RB. I have never heard of an RB becoming bent, and they are generally of such massive construction as to make this unlikely.

From the photos it looks to me more as though the derailment is down to poor trackwork, or possibly incorrect loading of the RB, or incorrect use of the spring releiving mechanism.

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

Whatever the cause, it's a big old lump to rerail manually!
