I wasn't aware until recently that at least one of the two 1926 CS 45-tonners for the LNER was fitted with steam braking.

I called into Grosmont whilst up that way on holiday in early September and had a 'catch-up' chat with BDCA member Charlie Dore who drives their 1926 Gresley-influenced 45-ton crane 330107 (ADRC95224). Charlie invited me onto the footplate of the crane and pointed out the control valve for the currently inoperational steam brake. Pipework is in place from the valve to wheel-brake cylinders, passing through the hole down the centre-pin, but the supply point on the boiler is currently blanked off.

I'm not aware if the long-scrapped sister crane 330154 was also steam-braked. It's certainly a very unusual fitment and I wonder if anyone can tell us more about it?

I drove this crane for two years (1977-1979) and was never aware of it having a steam brake. It is a long time ago, though we always moved the crane into position with the train engine and not self travel. One thing I would like to know is where was 107 between the time when Doncaster got York's 75t in 1966 and its move to Healey Mills in 1/1968?

Peter,

Three questions follow!...

Charlie pointed out that the handwheel for controlling the steam brake was the smallish one low down on the left-hand side (see http://www.bdca.org.uk/gallery/index.ph ... ne-2009-33). Do you recall that one?

Regarding the whereabouts of 107 immediately before it went to Healey Mills, is it possible that Doncaster had both of them for a year or two?

Could you confirm, from your incredibly fine diary, that 107 went to Healey Mills in 1/1968 as you said, and not 11/1968?

Sorry, a slip of the finger, should be 11/68. This makes 107 missing longer, still would like to know where it was between 66 & 11/68. Have seen the photo of brake valve on 107 and never used it though I am still unsure about seeing it. Will have a query about 154 later when I have got some info together.
