Thought I would throw something in here to get it started. Does anyone know what the difference in weight was between the cranes as steam and when they were converted to Deisel hydraulic ? I would guess they would be lighter after conversion. Chris |

I have a weight diagram ZI011A for the "76 Tonne Breakdown Crane (Conversion)" which gives to total weight as 161.7t, without matchwagon 140.8t and without relieving bogies 119.18t. The 75 tonne Diesel crane ZI012A with telescopic jib is given as: Total weight 155t, without relieving bogies 125t. I also have a diagram ZI007A for the "Cowans Sheldon 45 Ton Stean Crane" with an apparently articulating jib but it is not helpful in giving weight info other than the axle loads for travelling. Diagram Z1007A probably relates to ADRC96719. This was supplied by Cowans Sheldon to the LNER in Feb 1940 but following an accident c. 1968 the original jib was replaced with an all-welded jib with an articulated foot. The crane was converted to Diesel Hydraulic power at Derby Locomotive Works in August 1986 and renumbered ADRC96719. It ended its days at Brighton and upon withdrawal was sold to Phillips Scrap Metals in April 1997 for scrapping, but remained at Brighton OOU until at least 1999. Eventually it was resold to Waterman Railways and now is enjoying a new lease of live at Crewe. As far as I know, this is the only Cowans 45-tonner to receive an articulated jib. Roger |
