Today I had a conversation with somebody I used to work with who told me of different thinking for manning B&R, using a dedicated crew financed by the different TOC's based at Wigan. Does anybody have any information about this?

A dedicated crew are in the process of being trained at Wigan, they are made up from ex army road crane drivers with no railway experience. All I can say is good luck. I think they will need it having had over 20 years experience of railway derailments.

The four Volvo/srs 2 axle Road rail vehicles allocated to Didcot, Wigan, Millerhill & Knottingley, the larger Volvo ('R' reg) also reported at Didcot.
A few pics of current equipment attached attending a siding derailment at Luton over the weekend.
Note the gangs PPE clothing with DB Schenker Breakdown and Recovery, with Supervisors 'status' also displayed.
All 'T' reg dating from 1999 T241-244 CNN.

Hi, the full time breakdown team at Wigan is now up and running. How long they will last with such a big area to cover. Definitely a single mans job. After being a member of the Wigan gang in B.R.days I don't think that any women would be capable of doing it.

Gibo.

As far as I am aware all four of NR's remaining breakdown cranes have been kept at Springs Branch TMD for the last few years. There's a good photo on Flickr of three of them inside (I understand that there isn't room for all four).

I have no idea how much use they get now.
