Hello Neil.

We fixed up an auxiliary water tank on the rear bogie of the NVR crane before taking it from Wansford to Ferry Meadows station for track laying in April. It was my colleague David O'Connell's idea and I thought it was quite novel until I read that you'd beaten us to it by a good 20 years!

Below is a photo of the crane complete with the auxiliary tank. We didn't use any of that extra water as it happens, though the crane's own water level was so low by the end of the day that the injectors started playing up as we filled the boiler before closing down for return to base.

Also to be seen on the bogie is a bag that we filled with coal before departing from Wansford. We used some of it, though not as much as might be envisaged from the emptiness of the bag, driver Richard deciding to use coal from the bag when he could rather than completely diminishing the crane's coal bunker (it would be easier to refill the bag than the bunker, he quite rightly said).

This is one in a sequence of 5 pictures taken by the photographer Ben Brooksbank
of the 08h40 Sheffield - Manchester, ex-LNER B1 4-6-0 derailed at Woodhead on the down-up crossover for single line working, blocking the route for about 2 hours, being re-railed by the Gorton crane, the very crane we have at Bluebell, how fortunate to have been photographed, recorded and scanned in such detail, and made available in this manner, just great!

I'd love a more detailed print of this, and a nice big poster print too, but as we are in the coal and water thread I note that a tray or box on top of the trailing Stokes bogie is laden with bagged coal. This now carries the 550 gallon water tank referred to earlier in this thread.
The rest of the sequence is linked below, what an interesting set of pictures by Ben Brooksbank, who took many other interesting pictures too, and had them digitised and recorde in this manner.

I guess I'm coming a little late to this discussion, but for info, the Allerton breakdown train included a 6-wheel former 'milk tanker' as an additional water supply. When the Allerton crane was bought for Dinting, by the Bahamas Loco Society, the water tank came with it. This, along with the crane, is now on the KWVR, the tank wagon having returned to its former identity in the colours of Express Dairies.
