I attach a picture that a friend posted on Facebook, it was aquired from a gallery at Robin Hoods Bay near Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. He has given me permission to post it so hope there are no copyright issues with the post. The car could give a rough idea of when the photograph may have been taken. The 25 Ton Craven Bros. Crane on the right was probably the Middlesbrough Crane but not sure about the other, it looks like a 35 Ton Cowans Sheldon possibly from York. I would be interested in any comments and don't mind being corrected.

Horizontal cylinders preclude a CS heritage. ( and I do know the only exception, thankyou )
Wheels are 2-6-2.
Probably the ex NER Cravens 35 tonner of 1912; wherever then based?

Its surviving twin is still uncertain as to where its future home is going to be.

Tried to get the loco number to help with area, think its LNER 7165 an ex GER J69 0-6-0T if it is its pre 1946. Allocated to Stratford. An F4 took this number post 1946 allocated to Lowestoft. Can the owner of the original pic confirm loco number please. I love these detective stories.

Can the original poster try to get the loco number as I cant quite get it from the print. This will enable me to narrow the area down where it is taken from and perhaps get more info from the RA site. Its very similar to the four shots ive posted of the Cramlington derailment.

Hello 52D,
I have sent the owner of the photograph a message but he is on holiday and has promised to help with the identification on his return.

All, though it's taken a long time to track down the owner of the picture I have now done so but unfortunatly it has been lost or misplaced during a house move and are told that if it is found I will get to see it.

The left hand crane is without doubt CME1, the NER's 35-ton Cowans Sheldon crane, w/n 3335, delivered in 1916. There are several features to aid this identification, most notably the very long 5-axle carriage, and the distinctive and unique jib.

My records indicate that this crane was at Gateshead friom 1916 to '27, York from '27 to '63, then Dairycoates from '63 to sometime between '64 and '67, then back at York until '68. It may have made a brief final appearance in Cambridge in '68, before being broken up in that year.

Given that the car in the photo looks to me to be post 1927, and the loco is in LNER livery, it seems a safe assumption that the crane was based at York at the time of the photo.

It does bear a startling similarity to the Cramlingham pictures posted elsewhere, but the loco number looks different to me, and althought he fence is very similar, the bushes prominent in this photo are not seen in the Cramlingham shots. It could be that they were cut down, I suppose, or it could be a separate but confusingly similar incident.
