I'm hoping to shortly start building a model of the Salisbury breakdown crane (Cowans Sheldon 36t, DS37), and the M&T vans in use with this crane (DS1553, DS1554).

The problem I currently have is that the crane doesn't seem to have been photographed all that often and I'd like to see photos of the crane (and support vehicles) before I kick off construction. The best pictures of it that I've seen are in Robertson's 'On Didcot, Newbury and Southampton lines', and I'd welcome other views if you can provide me with links or references.

At this stage I'm just trying to work out the details, including livery for the early BR (C.1948-54ish) period and I'd be good to confirm whether the ex-LSWR non-corridor carriages used as M&T vans retained their full sets of duckets and windows.

Many thanks for any help,

Steph

You have hit the problem that everybody faces when they have an interest in something that is not a Loco.
No details available.

Best of luck with your search.
Anything in Peter Tatlow's books on Steam Cranes?

Bryan,

Aah yes, forgot to mention those. It's quite well covered in Volume 1 of Tatlow, but no photos of the M&T vans in my era. It appears that in the late fifties she was paired with rebuilt LSWR 'Ironclad' carriages and later still with a Maunsell carriage and 6-whl tank wagon (one time milk tank). It's those earlier photos that I'm struggling with.

I don't think I've seen a photo of the crane in SR days at all!

Steph,

In addition to the two books you mention (Tatlow Vol 1, and Robertson), I know of the the following:-

1 photo in Browlie's "Railway Steam Cranes"
3 photos in Bishop's "Off the Rails"
2 photos in "Railway Accidents in Pictures - Trains in Trouble" - Volume 2
1 photo in "Railway Accidents in Pictures - Trains in Trouble" - Volume 5
1 photo in "Steam World" Issue 59 - May 1992

The photo in T.i.T. V5 dates from 1926, all the others are from the BR era. Browlie is undated.

Roger.

Roger,

Apologies for not replying sooner, I don't get the chance to check the forum as much as I'd like.
Thanks for the further photo references, I'll keep an eye open for the various publications.

Cheers,

Steph
