Interesting find, Bryan.

I've read on Geograph that the viaduct was buried in 1913, four years after this incident, due to instability caused by mining subsidence.

The crane appears to be a Cowans Sheldon 15-tonner. I think it's likely to have been either CME 1 or CME 2 which were built in 1893 for the NER (according to PT's book). The rather long canopy may give someone a clue as to the specific identity.
