Post subject:  R&R 45-ton cranes on the Southern

I am presently researching details of the evolution of the appearance of the 45-ton cranes supplied to the SR on Government account in 1940, and whilst some of the keys dates are starting to become clearer I would be extremely grateful if any readers can supply any dating evidence for the following changes. The two cranes are 1560S and 1561S.

1) The cranes were supplied painted in a micaceous paint in a fairly dark grey colour, probably a "battleship grey". At some time after the war they were painted black. When did this change occur? Were they ever black in Southern days, or did this only come about in BR(S) days? Did either or both ever carry the "ferret and dartboard" BR emblem (there are photos of them with the "cycling lion" but I cannot recall seeing the former)?

2) When supplied, the cranes both had two sets of tool lockers on the jib runner wagon, essentially the same layout as the four GW cranes. Fairly shortly after delivery to the SR the left-hand lockers (viewed from the footplate) were removed, and the jib runners were adapted to carry two emergency bogies in their place. When did this alteration occur?

3) Later in life (probably not until the 'red' era) both cranes lost the emergency bogies and the space on the jib runner was used (on 1560 at least) to carry the spreader beam. So when did the cranes lose the emergency bogies?

4) Photos make it evident that the cranes carried spreader beams from the start (or near the start) however there is no evidence of where they were stowed for travel until near the end, when on 1560 only, the beam appeared on the jib runner where the emergency bogies had previously been carried. So where were the beams carried before this, and where was 1561's beam carried in later years? There is some suggestions that it was carried in the well of the jib runner alongside the bottom/hook block, but there is a lack of photgraphic evidence to support this - or any other - theory.

5) At some time both cranes had their turbogenerator moved from its original location (high up on the RH side, half in the cab, as on the GW cranes) to a lower position outside the RH side of the crab. When did this change occur?

If anyone can provide answers, preferable with some kind of supporting evidence such as photos, I would be very grateful. There may well be further questions in due course!

Further reseach has partly answered question 1 - both seem to have carried both forms of the BR emblem at some stage.

There are two photographs of R&R 45t cranes in 'Southern Way,Special Issue No.10. S.C. Monroe's Journey in Steam.'
Page 78 features DS 1560 at Reading.
Page 82 has an unidentified crane at Strawberry Hill EMU depot. Early BR emblem can be seen.
