I wonder if anyone can advise any information on the crane shown in the photo.
It was taken at Crewe Works sometime between 1923 and 1939.
The Crane Driver (2nd from the left on top row) was Henry Potts.

I've looked at Peter Tatlows LMSR steam travelling cranes list without finding anything certain but a James Taylor of 1892 could be possible. Being chain roped I would suspect that early.
But if it was not actually classed as a Travelling crane he might not have picked it up.

I suspect it is the same as this - probably pictured outside the Crewe Works paintshop?
This does appear to be capable of being a travelling crane. It does not appear to be fully roped/chained.

I must have found the pic on the NMSI website when it was known as the NMSI and had that catalogue number.
I have tried to find it again on the ScMusm and NRM photograph galleries - without success.

What a pity your man had so many mates who wanted their photo taken!

Chris - belated thanks for your interesting reply and photo. It does look remarkably like that in the group photo.
Regards
Pete
