Are there any details of the steam crane that was based at the Marchwood Military Railway
I seem to remember it was converted to diesel hydraulic about 1974, not too successfully if I remember correctly.
I was based there for almost 9 years and only remember it being used on two occasions, once to load FV 432s on to flats, and another time when it tipped due to the outriggers sinking into the track bed.

Almost certainly a 1944 built Ransomes and Rapier 45 ton crane.

Was it fitted with relieving bogies?
What years are you refering to? I assume mid 70s into mid 80s.

I spoke to a WO called Jez about a decade ago - known to you? However I think the last crane had left before his time.

There is a series of Marchwood photos at the IWM, taken in 1944 with a ten wheel Cowans Sheldon BDC in one of them.

Not Ransomes, but Cowans Sheldon; one of two built in 1942 for the Ministry of Supply.
Steam 30T 6-4W CS 7869 -70/42

Recorded at Longmoor ( 1955 and 1965 ), Marchwood and finally Shoebury as 62007 ( 1981-2; scrapped ca. 1986 ). I do not think that a topple at Shoebury in the 1980s helped its future?

The other went to Austria, ca 1945, and was passed to OBB as 966 300; and is presently stored oou/preserved at Strasshof preservation depot.
