This hand crane may not be counted as a breakdown crane as we know it, but may be of interest,
and no doubt was used as one.

Western Front: Western Front (Belgium), Ypres Area, Ypres. A 16-wheel hand-powered, 6-ton capacity, partially armoured light railway crane, built by Ransomes and Rapier of Ipswich, England. The crane was used for breakdowns. This model was replaced by a lighter one, as it was too heavy for use on the light rail tracks. Lent by Captain Williams.

I think the partial armour referred to is actually the hinged fall plates at the sides.

When the fall plates were in the down position the winders of this hand wound crane would stand on these, each side winding cranks attached to the drive shaft, likely a slew brake and a lever operated band brake to brake the loads on the driver's side.

Very easy for a winder to get hurt by the crank handle if it's not smartly removed before the load is released.

I did email them some time ago and note that the 'protection' would not be afforded when the crane was actually in use - but they have never altered the caption.

Two went to the Jerusalem area ng lines; and one of these is, in part, 'preserved', possibly in workable condition, on a concrete base at Amman Station, Jordan.
