Longmoor Military Railway Volume 3 - Section regarding Cranes

Comments regarding some captions to crane photographs.

p.757 upper

Not a Brownhoist. This is the 1917 CS fitted with its lattice jib. Note the cylinders mounted at 45 degrees. This was an unusual machine, being optimised for piling, in that the crane works are markedly off-centrally mounted.

p.760 upper

This is not of the 1917 Cowans Sheldon, which was a four-axle machine, not with relieving bogies.
That illustrated is a Cowans Sheldon 45 ton relieving bogie machine from the batch of eight CS 8052-59 of 1943. These were contracted by the MoS on 11/6/43.
MoS records note the order was completed by 8/44. All went to the continent in1944.

Only one of these was retained by the Army, in the UK, into the 1950s. ( The others - SNCF 3no., MAV 1no. which is preserved, ScoW 1no., BR 1no., which is preserved, albeit dieselised, at Llangollen, and one, sent to Suez, was taken by the ESR. )

A CS 45 ton crane was at Longmoor at the September 1948 open day, similarly in 1955, but by 1966 Longmoor had only an R&R machine.

A CS 45-ton crane, works no. 8059, is recorded at Eskmeals in 1981, by then converted to diesel power and renumbered as 62001. I assume this is after a period at Marchwood, and as the only such CS machine confirms a works number.

p.760 upper

Visible in the background is the second Brownhoist; jib removed.

P.761 upper

This is the CS machine.

p.760 lower.

This is a R&R 45 ton capacity crane. almost certainly 62006 , ex 214.
Presently at Toddington.

Details of the two Brownhoists are given in salient paragraphs, but there are caption references to them being 30 ton cranes which neither describes their capacity, nor their tare weight?
