William Aves latest book ‘The Lines Behind the Front’ has a few crane photos.; some of which are not sourced from IWM and are therefore less well known. p.139 middle and bottom - CS with slotted jib – either the ex MR or NER example. p.87 top - Latticed jib bogie crane – RR machinery layout but probably a Smith 15 tonner. ( The tank engine weighs 90 tons – the two sheerlegs must be doing most, if not all, of the work ) p63 bottom - Cranes at Audruicq Wagon Shops – British built 4w ca.5t cranes to the left; American bogie cranes of higher capacity to the right. These cranes are allocated for erecting wagons. p.64 top - ( IWM ) Cravens 35 tonner at Tournai – the ex NER machine; works plate is certainly dated 1912. There are other photos with port/quay cranes in the background; and several pictures of the loading span at Richborough. |
