East Japan Railway Company, (JR East) have taken delivery of the first of two Kirow Multi Tasker 810 railway cranes for tracklaying in the Tokyo metropolitan area. So far so normal.

The 350kw powered locomotive cum jib carrier to tow them to where they are needed ( first novelty ) has been developed and built by HeiterBlick Gmbh, Leipzig, and will also accommodate the counterweights of the cranes. They are mounted on two four wheel powered bogies

Now for the interesting bit.
The driver’s cab of the jib carrier should always lead in the direction of travel.
Thus a live ring between the carrier's traveling gear and superstructure allows rotation of the latter, and the cab, through 180°.

Interesting idea, saves using a 'mainline' locomotive to haul to and from site that sits idle whilst work carried out. 50 km/h top speed (30 mph) far too slow for the uk network though- not many class 8 head code trains these days....
