A photograph has come to light of a British built breakdown crane, stated as Cowans Sheldon manufacture, on DB as DB6602 in 1966. It is a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement crane of the Cravens 35 ton pattern ( i.e. as the crane preserved at Leuven ). It is noted as withdrawn from Hannover Division in 1968.
There are two opinions as to where it came from - one that it was ordered for Belgium in 1917 ( by the Belgian Commission Internationale de Ravitaillerment ) and supplied there in 1918 ( at the same time as the one noted above ); the second opinion is that it was in Poland when the Soviets were moving west and was pulled back by DR into the western zone. If that it is possible then it could be from two sources - firstly: taken from Belgium by the Wehrmacht and used in Poland ( to support this idea there was another pair of cranes taken from a Belgian manufacturer and used in Poland which ended up in the western zone ) or secondly: supplied to Russia and taken by the Germans in Poland. ( If ordered for Russia one would suppose to 5' gauge, so it would have been converted. )
Anyone fancy some time in Cumbria Archives looking up some papers?
